Hello, Star Fleet drivers, and a very Happy New Year to you all!
We’d like to start off 2015 by introducing you to one of Star Fleet’s die-hard drivers, a veteran of over a decade with thousands of miles under his belt, a family man, and an award-winning auto mechanic, Mr. David Bishir!
David, a retired journeyman iron worker, has traveled across the country for Star Fleet for over 11 years with Beverly, his co driver and wife of 50 years. David and Beverly have 6 children, 17 grandchildren, 8 great-grandbabies, and one Schnauzer, Snapper, who likes to tag along on drives as well; he’s been through 46 of the 50 states! Not too shabby for a dog (not too shabby for anyone, really!).
“[Driving for Star Fleet] is a great way to make an income and see the sights of the USA,” David says. “It keeps me from having to rely on Social Security or my pension, and it’s nice for unexpected expenses, too.” Despite the thousands and thousands of miles David has traveled over the years, he says he’s never once had an accident, something for which he thanks God. Preparation, Dave alludes, is a key element in this business. “We get on the computer and check the weather before we leave, then monitor it along the way. We also check to see where the best fuel prices are and try to use that route. ”
When you’re on the road as much as David, you learn to take your down time where and when you can. “I love to fish,” David says, “so when we head northwest, we always come home across Highway 2 and spend a couple of days fishing at Devil’s Lake, North Dakota.” Of course, sometimes you don’t plan the best parts of the journey; the most memorable parts can happen all on their own. “Seeing Mt. Rushmore on our 40th wedding anniversary was just a fluke: right place, right time!” David goes on to say. “Finding Devil’s Lake, driving through the Smokey Mountains, countless beautiful landscapes, sunrises, and sunsets…It seems every trip is unforgettable.”
While he loves traveling across the U.S., David’s true passion is his hobby: automobiles. He wastes no time in describing his mechanical pride and joy. “We have a 1970 Plymouth Duster, which our employment with Star Fleet has really helped finance. It’s won several awards: Best Paint, Best Interior, Best Engine, Best Mopar, Peoples’ choice, and Best of Show”
You might think it would take the work of more than just one man to make such an eye-catching, award-winning machine, but David confirms that’s not the case. “I do almost all the work on my vehicles and other projects. Our mini chopper…”
“…and NHRA Super Gas Race Car…”
“…have also won awards! Our race car won Fort Wayne, Indiana’s Cavalcade of Wheels in its class and Peoples Choice. My son, David II, and I built that car as well.” David goes on to say that the revenue he earns with Star Fleet has been a huge help in keeping his cars maintained, fueled, and winning awards.
David’s tenure with Star Fleet has seen lots of changes, but he maintains his goal of striving for perfection in his work (as well as his play). “Beverly and I went to work for Mel in Elkhart, then followed her to Goshen to different locations. Now we drive for Sandy in Middlebury.” After all is said and done, though, David says his experience with Star Fleet has been overwhelmingly positive. “We’ve worked with a lot of wonderful people.”
Remember, Star Fleet drivers: the winter roads are treacherous, so follow David’s example and stay up to date on the weather and road conditions. Above all, stay warm, stay safe, and stay in touch!
