Bikers In Trucking: The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally

Hello, Star Fleet drivers!

Though it took us a little more time than we’d hoped to find material for the Bikers in Trucking blog theme, we finally managed to get in touch with somebody who has first-hand experience in one of the largest motorcycle rallies the modern world has to offer: the 74th annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally!

Sturgis, South Dakota

Sturgis, South Dakota

“We did a little research before we went, and we found out that, on the weekends, bikers are truckers,” says Dan Frederick, a two year veteran of the Star Fleet recruitment department. Dan, along with the rest of his team, spends all day on the phones and sorting through applications for new Star Fleet drivers, so it’s safe to say he knows a few things about truckers and their habits. “All the calls are geared to get potential drivers up to speed, equipped, oriented and get them started driving,” Dan says, “but with 86% of the RVs in the country being made in Elkhart, Indiana and needing to go to Spokane, Miami, and everywhere in between, it takes more than phone calls to get the drivers we need.”

For that reason, Dan and his team of four  traveled all the way to South Dakota to set up a booth at the rally and start letting the attending bikers know about the amazing opportunities at Star Fleet. “We had a great deal of success explaining the industry to these guys, telling them that they don’t need to be a semi driver in order to be a trucker, they can just own a 1 ton pickup and still see the country,” says Dan. “They did a trade show/ job fair in southern Ohio, and even there they didn’t realize that the industry even existed. Nobody ever thought about how the trailers made it from Indiana! Its amazing how new the industry seems to be in areas outside of the Midwest.”

Of course, with over a week’s worth of time to put out the word that there were jobs to be had in a previously unknown industry, the Star Fleet recruiters had a great turnout, and the team noticed an interesting trend while talking with the bikers attending the rally. “Something else we found in Sturgis, was that ladies would stop and would be curious, then they’d get their husbands and say ‘I just found you a job for when you retire! We’ll travel, they’ll pay us, and we can still have some freedom.'”
With bikers naturally carrying a reputation for being a wild crowd, it’s not unreasonable to expect to see some rowdy behavior. Dan’s experience, however, didn’t really fit that mold. “You think of bikers as crazy partiers, but the whole rally was professional and orderly… No crazy stuff went down.” Of course, Star Fleet employees heard rumors of some bikers at the campgrounds surrounding Sturgis going a little wilder than the crowds in town, but elected not to participate in such activity. They did manage to get a few shots of some of the custom motorcycles they saw there!

Take Your Best Shot New Theme!

Hello, Star Fleet Drivers! I’d like to remind everyone that THIS CONTEST IS REAL! The Bikers in Trucking theme didn’t get as much turnout as we’d expected, and we at Star Fleet are a little confused by that. All you have to do is post a picture to Facebook and you’re automatically eligible to win $1000! Who couldn’t use an extra grand for 5 minutes of work? If there’s something we’re missing or something else you’d like to see, leave a reply on this post and we’ll be happy to discuss it with you!

And now we come to the next Take Your Best Shot contest theme: Veterans in Trucking! With the state of the world the way it is these days, it’s more important than ever for America to maintain a strong military presence both at home and abroad, and the men and women who answer the call of the United States armed forces deserve both our respect and our recognition. So if you or someone you know has served our country and, when their duty was done, found another career behind the wheel of a truck, snap a quick pic or go through your old albums and enter it into the Take Your Best Shot contest! This theme will run until November 30th, so you’ve got plenty of time to select the perfect shot to submit!

It’s October, Star Fleet drivers, and from my experience, that means the weather’s about to change (and not in a fun way). Whatever you do, make sure to be prepared and drive safe. Stay tuned for more updates and articles!

P.S. Here’s a teaser pic from the next article. It may a bit behind schedule, but it’ll be worth checking out. Keep your eyes on the Facebook Page!
